When to bring it in
Oil service is the cheapest thing you will ever do for a European engine. These are the prompts:
Most modern European cars calculate their own service interval from how the car is actually driven. When it asks, it has counted cold starts and short trips, not just miles.
Usually valve stem seals or turbo seals. Worth catching early — it's a far smaller job before it becomes an oil consumption problem.
Gasket and seal leaks are common on higher-mileage European engines and they rarely stop on their own.
Low level, or the pickup is uncovering. Stop driving and call — this is the one that ends engines.
Oil degrades on time as well as distance. A car that covers few miles still needs its annual service.
The European difference
European manufacturers publish their own oil specifications — BMW LL-01, Mercedes 229.5, VW/Audi 502 00 and 504 00, Porsche A40 among them. These are approvals, not marketing. An oil that meets the grade but not the approval can shorten timing chain and turbo life.
Many of these engines hold seven to nine quarts and carry oil-fed timing components, variable valve timing, and turbochargers. They are less forgiving of the wrong viscosity than a naturally aspirated engine with a simple chain.
Extended intervals suit steady highway miles. Short local trips, which never bring the oil fully up to temperature, are harder on it — worth discussing rather than following the manual blindly.
