Cooling System Maintenance

Heat is the enemy. We keep it in check.

What's Included

Service, start to finish.

European engines run hot and depend on a complex cooling system of plastic and aluminum parts that have predictable service intervals. Proactive service here prevents head-gasket catastrophes later.

Still deciding? Our frequently asked questions cover what European service actually costs, whether OEM parts are worth it, and how our pricing compares with the dealership.

  • 03 Radiator & expansion tank replacement
  • 04 Hoses, clamps & fittings
  • 05 Coolant flush & refill
  • 06 Cooling system pressure testing

When to bring it in

What you'll notice first.

Cooling faults escalate faster than almost anything else on the car:

Temperature climbing above normal

Stop and let it cool. An overheated aluminium engine can warp a head, which turns a modest repair into a major one.

Sweet-smelling steam, or bright coolant under the car

European coolants are usually pink, blue, or violet. Any loss is worth finding straight away.

The heater blows cold, or only warms up moving

Often low coolant or a thermostat stuck open. The heater is fed by the cooling system, so it reports on it.

Topping up coolant more than once

A system that needs regular topping up has a leak, even if nothing is visible on the driveway.

A cooling or thermostat fault message

Many of these cars run electronically controlled thermostats and pumps, and they report their own faults.

The European difference

Why plastic and aluminium change the calculus

To save weight, European cooling systems use a lot of composite plastic — thermostat housings, water pump impellers, expansion tanks, coolant pipes. Plastic ages with heat cycling and tends to fail suddenly rather than gradually.

Many of these engines use electric water pumps and electronically mapped thermostats to hold a precise temperature for emissions and efficiency. They are diagnosed with software, not by feel.

Coolant type is not interchangeable. Mixing the wrong chemistry gels the system and attacks the aluminium it was formulated to protect, so a top-up with the wrong jug can cause the failure it was meant to prevent.
